Today marks the fourth consecutive year that I have attended the Cedar Park High School Choir's annual Princess Tea, and it was just as magical as ever! From the Chinese dragon photo station to the red lanterns on the stage and the tables, the high school theater was transformed into ancient China. Mulan hosted this year's concert of princesses and heroes for Mulan's Camp of Courage. Although the boys of the Pitch Black choral group had astounding harmonies and many comedic moments, they took even more of a backseat than previous years to the princesses of the evening who were performed by the Seasons. The show consisted of well-known Disney songs loosely woven together by a competition of courage led by Mulan.
The biggest surprise characters of the evening were Princess Leia and Han Solo of Star Wars fame. Although they didn't perform a solo number, there were lots of fun quips about the time they spent on other planets. Leia surprised everyone with her recipe for chocolate cupcakes, which apparently comes in handy no matter what planet you're on. This year's show didn't have as much inter-kingdom traveling as previous years and took place in Mulan's home country of China. During the first scene, the boys ran off to explore the Great Wall of China and only came back a few times, primarily for a lovely interlude of "When She Loved Me" right before the intermission. The rest of the time, Mulan led the princesses in a statue competition, drawing contest, and relay race while hyping them up with energetic Disney hits like "Zero to Hero" and "I'll Make a Man Out of You."
My favorite performance of the evening was "Be Out Guest," an ensemble dance number that everyone participated in, even the "Fairy Godmother" who runs the events. The choreography was excellent. The whole group sounds incredible when they all harmonize together as Soundwave. The other stellar ensemble number was "Remember Me" from Coco, which was performed in both Spanish and English. This was the second to last song of the show in which the group bid everyone farewell until next year, which can't possibly come quickly enough. Some of the princess solo numbers included "Part of Your World," "Belle," "I See the Light," "Once Upon a Dream," "For the First Time in Forever," and "How Far I'll Go." For many of these songs, the princesses came out into the audience to dance with eager little girls who wore matching costumes.
In addition to the stellar choreography and beautiful harmonizing, this is a great show to experience as an audience member. Each table is themed after a different princess, and the performers encourage participation from the attendees. For the statue game, the audience was tasked with calling out the name of each princess who moved. The "Kingdom Dance" was performed as an interactive dance number like in previous years as the princesses invited enthusiastic children to join them for the dance. There was also an audience competition to look for a treasure chest that was hidden on one of the tables. After the show, the performers stuck around in the lobby for photos and autographs. I got my picture taken with "Ariel," who was incredibly sweet and complimented me on my appearance.
As I left CPHS Princess Tea, I couldn't help but feel enchanted by the magical evening I'd just experienced. The talented performers, stunning costumes, and immersive theming all combined to create an unforgettable event that delighted audiences of all ages. Whether you're a Disney devotee, a fan of musical theater, or simply looking for a fun and family-friendly activity, the Princess Tea is an event not to be missed. Mark your calendars for next year's show and get ready to be transported to a world of wonder and enchantment!
Only one month after my recent obsession with Find Me in Paris , the time-traveling ballerina princess drama dropped its third and final season on Hulu today. Though somewhat predictable, this season offered a satisfying conclusion to the show's unique concept that combined dance with science fiction and tied up all remaining loose ends from the previous seasons. We finally learned the truth about Lena's birth and why she's always being chased by anyone remotely interested in time travel. Nearly every character got paired off at the end, even if it meant some questionable decisions on behalf of the writers. The season also offered some of the most beautiful dance sequences in the show yet for its key story moments. While I could have done without the repetitive recap sequences, the final episodes made it clear that this was always meant to be the end and gave the cast and crew many happy memories to look back upon. The final season of Find Me in Paris incorporated the ...
Back when I was a pre-teen in the '90s borrowing recorded VHS tapes of Sailor Moon from my friends who had cable, I never imagined that one day I would see a cast of professional Japanese actresses portraying the characters in a live musical! Musical adaptations of anime are fairly common in Japan, whereas America just gets the occasional Disney on Broadway adaptation. The North American tour of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: The Super Live began in Pittsburgh last week on March 12th. I attended the official opening night yesterday in Austin and had my first introduction to the world of Japanese musical theatre. The show was presented to an enthusiastic crowd of cosplayers and life-long fans of the series. Light sticks that could be used to participate in the rave-style concert that took place after the main show were sold at the merchandise booth. The musical is an abridged summary of the show's first arc, which covers the Dark Kingdom saga and introduces all of the inner s...
Almost two years ago, Disney announced that they were working on a spinoff series to Sofia the First . The best place to reveal new updates about this mysterious series would have been the D23 Expo , which took place in Anaheim last weekend. Instead, Disney Jr. quietly posted on Instagram today that we can expect to see the new series, Sofia the First: Royal Magic on Disney+ in 2026. This is fantastic news if it's true, but Disney has broken promises on many other upcoming shows over the upcoming years, so it's a good idea to take all their announcements with a grain of salt until there is something more substantial like a trailer or release date. Still, it's exciting to have a title and more information about the series. Unlike the original announcement about it being a spinoff like Elena of Avalor , the show will now be a direct sequel that continues Sofia's adventures after graduating from Royal Prep . The official summary is as follows: "Sofia the Firs...
Yesterday, the Starz network released the series finale of The Spanish Princess , concluding The White Queen trilogy of miniseries that began in 2013. Based on a book series called The Cousins' War by Phillippa Gregory , the trilogy covers the women who stood behind the men in power in the English monarchy from 1464 to the 1530s, preceding the first two sovereign queens, Mary and Elizabeth. The White Queen , The White Princess , and The Spanish Princess grant us a rare opportunity to see what life was like for medieval monarchs. Watching them reminded me of why I prefer the fairy tale versions of royalty. Those stories do not contain the gory deaths, gruesome births, and invasive politics that historical dramatizations like these exemplify. In fact, I had very little interest in watching the second season of The Spanish Princess until I watched some historical videos and learned that the king that Catherine of Aragon was married to was none other than King...
Another Aladdin production , another Jasmine song. With the recent addition of "Speechless," Jasmine has had a different solo song in every incarnation of the story. Yes, "A Whole New World" is consistently used as the romantic duet, but it is not seen as Jasmine's signature song in the same way that "Part of Your Wold," "Someday My Prince Will Come," or "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" is associated with their respective princesses because it is just as much Aladdin's song as it is Jasmine's. While Ariel and Rapunzel have many original solos scattered throughout The Little Mermaid and Tangled series , the Aladdin series sadly did not contain any original songs . As a result, Jasmine's songs are buried within so many different productions of Aladdin that even die-hard fans might have trouble finding them all. That's why I decided to compile this list of my top three Jasmine solos along with a little backgrou...
I was on the fence about reviewing the new Snow White remake for a while, but since this is The Princess Blog, it's only fair . (See what I did there?) This movie has been the source of endless controversy over the past five years or so. Some of it was unfounded, particularly when it involved racist comments toward the lead actress , but some of it is justified. When the movie was first announced, I shared my thoughts about how the story of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" has already been retold countless times by other studios in a way that modernized it with respect toward the original fairy tale and didn't step on Walt Disney's legacy. Creating a blatant copy of the first feature-length animated movie of all time and taking away the one thing that made it special—the animation—is an insult to the animation medium as an art form. My stance on this has not changed, so here are my thoughts on this sham of a film. Ever since the backlash to Rachel Zegler...
A few days ago, Disney released the full soundtrack of their controversial Snow White movie that comes out this week. Among the multitude of new songs that have been added to the butchering of this classic film is one performed by Andrew Burnap called "Princess Problems." This song has not been promoted nearly as much as the new "feminist" anthem, "Waiting on a Wish," and for good reason. With all the negativity surrounding this movie, anyone who sees the title of this song would have instant fodder to take it out of context and apply it to Disney directly, and they wouldn't be too far off. Disney does have princess problems, but not the ones described in the song. A couple of weeks ago, Disney announced that they were ceasing production of their upcoming Tiana series , which had been in development hell for the past five years, upsetting many fans and even the voice actress for Tiana herself . The cause of this cancellation was their decision t...
When I wrote my series of fairy tale origin posts , one major story that I skipped was "Sleeping Beauty." It wasn't because I didn't care for this story as much as the others, but instead that it had a less complex narrative of changing with the times . In fact, this fairy tale is so simple that no matter how many updates modern adaptations incorporate, it is rarely altered so drastically from its roots to the point of being unrecognizable, except in the case of a ridiculous 2016 horror movie called The Curse of Sleeping Beauty . Of all the movies I argued against depicting the theme of "Be pretty, girls, and things might work out," Sleeping Beauty is the biggest outlier. It is probably for this reason that it is the only Disney Princess movie that did not get a direct live-action remake , but instead a creative reimagining with Maleficent , which focused on the more active villain than the mostly passive princess. Determining how much Sleeping Beauty h...
The first post I wrote in this blog was called "How the Disney Princesses Stayed Modern for 80 Years." The answer was a combination of creating new princesses to match the times along with branded promotional videos, events, and merchandise that combine the old with the new. The latest example is this year's Ultimate Princess Celebration , which is an attempt to celebrate all of the Disney Princesses, including ones that may feel outdated by today's standards, by releasing imagery that makes it look like they're all friends. This is a wonderful method of keeping some of my favorite childhood characters relevant , but it is also a shield used to cover up a darker truth that many of these characters would not be deemed acceptable by today's standards. We have reached a point in Hollywood in which traditional feminine traits are considered weak or problematic . As such, characters like Raya are considered the only acceptable way to portray a woman in the medi...
I thought I said everything I had to say about Disney's upcoming remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs starring Rachel Zegler until this set leak happened and took the internet by storm. While I'm no stranger to set leaks , this one really takes the cake. Maybe it's the lighting in these shots, Rachel's unfinished hairstyle in the process of being set, or her unnatural expression, but something seems very off about these photos. Can you spot it? It's probably the bright yellow skirt. As accurate of a depiction this is to the dress Snow White wore in the original animated film, these colors are horrendously bright and do not look good on our young actress at all. Don't worry, though. I'm sure they'll fix it with CGI. Rachel Zegler sports a surprisingly screen accurate rendition of Snow White's iconic dress with a blue bodice, white collar, yellow skirt, and red teardrop-shaped accepts on the puffed sleeves. And yet, it looks wrong. Could it...
