Snow White's 80th Anniversary

If you're a fan of Disney's 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, you're in luck. This year is the movie's 80th anniversary, and Disney is going out of their way to team up with a whole bunch of companies to make it a huge event. Though the story and characters have evolved vastly over the years, the original animated film still holds a huge historical significance over the way that princess stories are told. Not only was it the first feature-length animated movie of all time, but it was also the first animated film with a fairy tale princess as the lead character. The anniversary event kicked off this past summer with a special screening of the classic film at the D23 Expo, and announcements have been popping up everywhere since then. Let's take a look at all of the awesome things coming out this year in honor of the fairest one of all.

Straight from the D23 Expo, the Disney Store announced a new collection of exclusive Snow White merchandise featuring new artwork. This collection is along the same vein as the "Art of Ariel" and "Art of Jasmine" collections that were launched at previous Expos. Though there is plenty of Snow White merchandise on the Disney Store's website, there doesn't seem to be a special page for the anniversary just yet. There's also a huge collection of new Funko Pop figures featuring all of the characters from the movie. All of the Disney Princesses had Pops of their likeness, but not there are ones for all seven dwarfs, the prince, and multiple versions of Snow White. Also new for the 80th anniversary, the jewelry company Pandora has launched a beautiful sterling silver bracelet charm of the Prince giving Snow White her wake-up kiss. It has an incredible amount of detail for such a small charm. Pandora is a close partner with Disney and has a ton of charms for them.

If you're into makeup, you can't miss this amazing collection from Besamé celebrating the movie's color palette. It comes inside of a replica of the book that opens at the beginning of the film. How amazing is that? The colors were crafted from style guides that they researched from the movie's Ink and Paint department, meaning you would wear the official colors used for Snow White's makeup and clothing in the movie. Since the ladies from the Ink and Paint department smudged their actual makeup onto Snow White's cheeks, it's like you'd actually be wearing her blush. All the colors are named after quotes from the film, and it even comes with a handheld "magic mirror!" This treasure is a must-have for any Snow White fan. You can subscribe on Besamé's website to find out when the collection will be available.

The newest announcement is the holiday window display at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City to be unveiled at the end of this month. Disney teamed up with designers Alberta Ferretti, Naeem Khan, Monique Lhuillier, and Marchesa to create some very unique pieces that were inspired by the film to use in the window display. The sketches released so far include colorful dresses and a gorgeous cape with a detailed wintry castle scene printed on the back. Saks is also holding Snow White character breakfasts on select dates later this month featuring Snow White and Dopey as special guests. The event is launching on November 20th with a live show called "Once Upon a Holiday," featuring a performance by Sofia Carson and a 40-person choir. I'm not sure if the show will be available to watch on social media afterward, but considering how much effort they're putting into it, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.

Snow White isn't the only Disney Princess anniversary being celebrated this month. A much quieter ruckus was raised recently on social media last week in honor of the 20th anniversary of Whitney Houston and Brandy Norwood's Cinderella that aired on the Wonderful World of Disney in 1997. The movie is iconic because it featured the first black Cinderella and put its own original spin on Rodgers and Hammerstein's version of the tale. An extended history of the movie was released last week containing intimate details about its production. It's very long but definitely worth the commitment. I read the article with great interest and learned a lot about the impact the movie had on people of color and all of the issues that went into its casting and production, which began in 1993. Apparently, Whitney Houston is not known for her punctuality. This movie may very well be my favorite version of Cinderella because everything in it was executed perfectly from the costumes to the sets to the music. You can see that the producers were very passionate about the project. It's hard to believe it's already been 20 years since it aired on the Wonderful World of Disney.

A lot of time has passed, but these princess stories will never be forgotten. Their legacy of kindness and hope will continue to inspire people until the end of time. It's a great year to be a Snow White fan because of all the amazing things that are happening this month. If you're like me and eagerly waited in front of the TV to watch Brandy as Cinderella in 1997, it's pretty shocking to realize how much time has passed and how much the world has changed since then. As far as I'm concerned, princesses will always be there to make us feel young at heart.
